“Together with our partners, U.S. “We stand with Muslims who continue to face oppression, including the Uighurs in the People’s Republic of China, the Rohingya in Myanmar, and other Muslim communities facing persecution around the world,” Biden said in a statement.

“In this sacred time of reflection, the United States also reaffirms our support for the suffering and devastated Muslim community,” Biden said, referring to earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria and flood victims in Pakistan.

“Especially today, we are mindful of the universal human right to practice, pray and spread our faith peacefully and openly.”

Biden’s emphasis on Uyghurs — who the U.S. government says are being subjected to genocide by Chinese communist authorities — comes amid tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Uyghurs have been subjected to mass incarceration in forced labor camps and banned from expressing their culture, according to human rights groups. Beijing says ethnic minorities are not being suppressed and any security measures in northwestern Xinjiang are a response to terrorist threats.
