President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo arrived early Friday after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kyiv on Wednesday United Arab Emirates.

Jokowi arrived in Abu Dhabi at 2:15 a.m. local time, the presidential secretariat announced on Friday. He was welcomed by Suhail Mohammed Al Mazroei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Abdullah Aldhaheri, UAE Ambassador to Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, Minister of Defense, and Husin Bagis, Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, among others.

On Friday morning, Jokowi will meet Emirati business leaders and investors, followed by a bilateral meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Both presidents plan to pray together in advance for Friday’s prayers.

The president and his entourage are scheduled to return home late Friday.

Mediating Role

After the meeting with Putin, Jokowi told reporters that it was important to resolve the conflict in Ukraine peacefully.

“Peace and humanitarian issues have always been the focus of Indonesia’s foreign policy. It is against this backdrop that I travel to Kyiv and Moscow,” Jokowi said in a joint statement with Putin.

While the war continued, Jokowi said it was important to continue to come up with peace resolutions and open up space for dialogue.

“I have conveyed President Zelensky’s message to President Putin and expressed my willingness to be a bridge of communication between the leaders of the two countries,” Jokowi said.

Before the visit, the president had said his mission was to seek an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, which has caused food shortages and soaring commodity prices around the world.

During his visit to Kyiv, Jokowi stressed the importance of Ukraine to the global food supply chain.

“All stakeholders must provide security for Ukrainian food exports, including seaports. I support everything the United Nations is doing to support this,” he said.
