Josh Lucas Wants to Make a Sequel to ‘Sweet Home Alabama’
The 51-year-old actor is keen to reprise his role as Jack, 20 years after the release of the film starring Reese Witherspoon, 46, as his estranged wife Melanie.
He told Entertainment Tonight: “I’d love to. I campaigned for her. I wouldn’t say she was the problem, but I think part of it was that Reece was just too busy.”
“I really believe – I assume, I hope – that she wants to be a part of it. It’s not that easy for her to carve out that part of her life. I don’t have the same responsibilities or time constraints, so I hope she can Find a time to do it, and I’ll be there tomorrow.”
The original film stars Reese as a fashion designer who leaves her small-town life to seek success in New York.
After her boyfriend (played by Patrick Dempsey) proposes to her, she returns home to divorce her husband and high school sweetheart, Jack.
However, the two eventually fell back in love and reconciled.
Meanwhile, director Andy Tennant previously revealed that he’s writing a script for the sequel.
He said: “Reese’s daughter Ava goes to school with my son, so I see Reese occasionally. When the movie became popular 13 or 14 years later, I started thinking about where they were all. Those four Where are the characters now: Melanie (Witherspoon), Jack (Lucas), Andrew (Dempsey) and Melanie Lynskey’s character Lurlynn?
“My kids are going to college, so it got me thinking about the new generation of kids going to school and young love, and what that does to parents when they see their kids become real adults. If the Apple hadn’t dropped Come down far from the tree, what does Melanie’s daughter look like?”
He added that his therapy focused on “Reese’s character and Melanie Lynskey’s character taking their kids on a college trip”.
Josh said he hadn’t read Therapy, but added: “Andy told me it was honest. Jack would have midlife issues, and there were differences in where Jack and Melanie landed.
“Damn, maybe Jack is living in a trailer park now and Melanie has the perfect life.”
