R. Kelly and his legal team have been granted a two-week extension to appeal his federal racketeering case after testing positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday.
as We have previously reported, Kelly’s team has fought for his release on various occasions, even pulling a COVID card several times before.According to a report Rolling StonesU.S. District Judge Ann M. Donnelly ruled that R. Kelly now has until Feb. 17 to formally appeal his September conviction, which was sentenced to at least 10 years in prison.
R. Kelly was convicted of having sex with an underage girl and bribing a state employee to create a fake ID in order to marry the late singer Aaliyah, who was only 15 at the time. He allegedly believed that Aaliyah was pregnant with his child and believed the marriage would save him from jail.
In a previous filing, R. Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, told Judge Donnelly that because of his COVID diagnosis, he would not be able to speak to his legal team over the phone to review his paperwork. Bonjean also said Kelly needed time to recover to play an effective role in his appeal process.
