Jury yet to reach verdict in Alex Jones' Sandy Hook trial

Jurors wrapped up their first day of deliberations in Friday’s trial without a verdict to determine that conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was responsible for spreading the word that the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax The cost of lies.

Jurors are scheduled to return on Tuesday. After a brief deliberation Thursday afternoon, the panel resumed work on Friday, asking for copies of dry-erase easels, markers, erasers and jury notes.

Jones was found responsible for the damage last year. The jury was tasked with deciding how much Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, should pay relatives of eight Sandy Hook victims and FBI agents who responded to the massacre.

On December 14, 2012, a gunman stormed Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, killing 20 children and six adults.

Jones testified at the trial, saying he was “sorry to finish” calling the school shooting a hoax. His lawyers argued that he was not responsible for any torture of the victims’ families and that they had exaggerated the harm the conspiracy theory had done to them.

Outside the courtroom, Jones called the trial a “kangaroo court” designed to trample on his right to free speech and bankrupt him.

In a similar trial in Texas in August, a jury ordered Jones to pay nearly $50 million (£45 million) in damages to the parents of one of the children killed in the shooting for lying.
