Kakao Entertainment accused of spreading negative news around competing idols

This sparked heated discussions, with many netizens questioning whether the company had been using Facebook pages to “virally market” rival idol groups to benefit Kakao Entertainment’s artists, the report said. Controversial posts, including “LE SSERAFIM’s new styling choices elicit conflicting reactions” and “ITZY’s new stage outfits elicit mixed reactions,” reportedly appear to have the idols facing problems.

Kakao Corp, the parent company of Kakao Entertainment, has also been under a lot of pressure in recent years. Last month, Reuters reported the resignation of its co-CEO Namkoong Whon as it looked to quell public outrage over its massive scale that has left many without widespread access to services. KakaoTalk first launched in South Korea in 2010, and to date, it has over 47 million active accounts in South Korea. Since its inception, like many other super apps in the region, the platform has moved into advertising, gaming, payments, mobile, and more.

The power outage was caused by a fire that damaged Kakao’s main data center. It has also led many to look for alternatives and question the country’s reliance on the app.
