Kate Winslet didn’t “spoil” her kids.
The “Titanic” star, who has Mia, 22, Bell, 8, and Jo, 18, admits she never wants her kids to think that having everything they want in life is the norm.
She told OK! Magazine: “I don’t want them to think forever, ever that it’s normal to travel the world and want nothing.
“I used to be afraid they’d be spoiled, but really, they’re only spoiled if you spoil them – and I wasn’t.”
Kate and her eldest daughter Mia starred side-by-side for the first time on Channel 4’s I Am Ruth, with the “Holiday” star having to ignore her mother’s “instincts” on set.
She said: “We are playing characters – these people are not us, this is not our story.
“But, for sure, people can’t help but draw on personal experience here and there, whether it’s your own experience or what you’ve experienced with friends or family.
“It’s astounding how free Mia and I have been able to be, it’s something I didn’t expect.
“My instinct to care for her had to go away because I knew I had to expose her, get her hurt, struggle, and it was very difficult.”
The 47-year-old star admits she never really thought about Mia – who was with her first husband Jim Threapleton – in Dominic Savage ) anthology series as her on-screen daughter.
She recalls: “When Dominique and I started to get to know this mother-daughter story, it never occurred to me that Mia would play Freya.
“I think because when Dominic said to me, ‘Okay, who should play Freya?’, I wasn’t pushing or trying to manipulate it in any way.”
“I suddenly thought, ‘My God, Mia can definitely do it, but you’ve got to meet her, you’ve got to talk to her and see if you think she can.'”
Kate previously revealed she had “always suspected” her daughter would follow in her footsteps.
She said: “Sure enough, a few years ago, she turned around and said, ‘I think I’d like to give it a shot’.
“What’s really great about her is that she has a different last name, so the first job isn’t there [in ‘Shadows’], she slipped under the radar. “
