Kenyan lawyer facing bribery charges at ICC found dead

[ad_1]

A Kenyan lawyer facing an International Criminal Court (ICC) trial for bribing and threatening prosecution witnesses in a past ICC case involving President William Ruto six years ago has been found dead, local media reported on Tuesday.

Paul Gicherou, 50, was found unconscious by his family at his home on Monday night, according to police.

“The body was found lying on its back, clean and casually dressed, with no saliva or blood when anyone opened it,” a police report said, according to the Associated Press.

It further stated that “the deceased was a known diabetic and hypertensive patient.”

Gicheru was first discovered by his 20-year-old son, who then told his mother that his 50-year-old father “took something”.

The police report noted “foam” coming from his mouth and concluded that he was having trouble breathing.

Police have not yet found the cause of his death.

Family lawyer John Hamminwa told reporters that Gicheru was stressed in the hours leading up to his death.

“He’s not himself,” Haminwa said, citing Jicheru’s family.

In February, Gicheru faced all eight counts of witness interference in the case of William Ruto, who was charged with inciting racial violence after the 2007 Kenyan election killed more than 1,000 people. He denies bribery of prosecution witnesses in the case.

Responding to news of his death, ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah said: “If there is information about the death of the accused, confirmation of this information should be submitted to the (trial) Chamber, The Chamber then makes a decision and closes the case.”
