Kevin Smith’s unreleased Prince documentary is ‘Finally Seeing the Light’.
The 52-year-old director has revealed that the full-scale film he made before the late music icon died of an accidental fentanyl overdose at 57 in April 2016 will finally be released.
“Jay and Silent Bob” Helmer spent hours chatting with the hit producer of “Raspberry Beret” at his Paisley Park estate.
The collaboration comes after Prince turned down a request from the filmmakers to use his hit “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” on Kevin’s 2001 buddy comedy “Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back.”
On “An Evening with Kevin Smith,” Kevin recalls: “We were trying to make a prince song for ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back’…we were trying to get Prince’s ‘the most beautiful girl in the world’ “But we couldn’t. Didn’t get any response from him.”
However, Kevin later got a call from Prince, who said he was a big fan of his 1999 film Dogma, and asked if he would work with him on a concert movie.
“I have this thing, and I’m going to put out my new album for a bunch of fans…I want to make a movie that we can bring to Cannes,” Prince told him.
In a new interview, the comedian updated the film and revealed that it looks likely to get a release date.
When asked how likely it was that the doctor would appear on screen, he told the Guardian: “Very high. The director of ‘OJ: Made in America’ is making a documentary for Netflix and came to my house to interview me. When they went to the vault after Prince died, they found a lot of unreleased music and music videos, but the only shot of him talking was I took it. It was remarkable: he acted differently than he did in his life , he talks for hours and hours. It looks like it’s finally going to see the light of day.
