The court heard that Kevin Spacey flirted with a 19-year-old John Barrowman and was “in bed with him”.
The former ‘House of Cards’ star is being sued by Anthony Rapp, an old classmate of the ‘Torchwood’ actor, who accused the disgraced actor of assaulting him at a party in 1986 when he was 14 and history. Pesci was not just a decade ago, as their legal battle continued in Manhattan on Tuesday (11.10.22), a judge was told the three met in the 1980s.
According to the testimony of John, 55, who stayed with Anthony when they met Spacey backstage at a New York theater, then went out to dinner and later a club, the “American Beauty” star’s attorney Jennifer Keller said the actor’s focus has been on the former “Dancing on Ice” judge, but “nothing out of place” happened.
She asked Anthony, who was on the witness stand, if he believed he was being “considered as a follower,” but he answered “no.”
Lawyers then cited parts of John’s previously unpublished testimony, where he said they had returned to Spacey’s apartment and lay in bed, but had not engaged in any sexual activity because of his friend’s presence.
John later sent flowers to the “The Usual Suspects” star and the two kept in touch, with the older actor often referring to his new friend and his mother, who “liked it”.
This account differs from that of Anthony, who testified earlier that they went home immediately after going to the nightclub.
Spacey’s lawyer asked him: “Just after Mr. Barrowman was ousted, you realized there was something wrong with your story,”
The “Rent” actor responded, “I don’t question his story. I just don’t remember.”
Elsewhere during the cross-examination, Ms. Keller questioned Anthony’s 2018 speech in which he credited Lupita Nyong’o for a New York Times article about her Harvey Weinstein experience The reason for bringing up Spacey.
She said: “Her article inspired you, it’s not true at all, is it?”
He replied: “I don’t know how this could be true.”
The lawyer then produced a copy of the article, dated October 19, 2017, and then showed a screenshot of a conversation between the “Star Trek: Discovery” star and his friend, BuzzFeed reporter Adam Vari.
The first date is October 11, and Anthony wrote: “I want to talk about another guy who is very powerful in our industry.”
Two days later, his friend replied: “I think everyone here wants to make sure your story has the greatest impact.”
When asked about the information, Anthony said: “When I look back at these events, I remember these events were happening.”
“Aren’t they 31?” the lawyer said contemptuously.
She then argued that the anecdote about Lupita was seen as “useful for you to gain more sympathy,” but the witness insisted that wasn’t the case because he “conflated the op-ed” with the broader allegations against Weinstein.
Despite his alleged ordeal, Anthony admits he’s seen Spacey in many films, TV and theatrical performances since then, and believes watching the star’s work is his “duty” as an actor, but insists Said he “never thought about finding a career” liked him.
Anthony filed a civil lawsuit against Spacey after a 2020 criminal charge of sexual assault was dismissed by a judge and is seeking damages for mental and emotional distress, medical bills and unemployment.
Spacey previously pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual assault against three men in the U.K. between March 2005 and April 2013, and in 2019 the Massachusetts state of indecency and sexual assault charges were dropped.
