The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) and Khalifa University of Science and Technology have signed two agreements.

The first goal is to develop solutions to diversify food import sources using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

The second objective is to implement the first phase of the project “Expanding Coverage of Inspection and Control Procedures” to develop smart control systems using artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) in target institutions in Abu Dhabi.

The UAE Innovation Center for Communications and Information Technology at Khalifa University is putting the requirements of the two agreements into action and developing a strategy and an executive dashboard to diversify the sources of food imports and reduce Risks and costs associated with diversification.

It is also developing an AI platform for smart inspection, which will include algorithm-based models for all ADAFSA inspection standards, cloud storage, and provide smart cameras compatible with the AI technology employed.

Saeed Al Bahri Al Ameri, Director General of Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, said: “These agreements aim to develop and implement a strategy to diversify food import sources, enhance smart control systems to strengthen the food safety system, and promote policy, regulation and the development of plans to ensure the safety and quality of food and its continuous supply to the UAE, and to assist in the development of accurate response plans in the event of disasters and crises or in the event of any food supply disruption.”

He also said that diversifying the sources of food imports would bring huge benefits to the national economy by expanding the base of global trading partners, providing importers with more choices, and ensuring that future crises would not be caused by shortages of one food item. or more goods into the market, as well as increased re-export trade volumes, thereby strengthening the country’s position as a center of global food security.

EBTIC will analyze the current status of food imports to identify essential food commodities and market gaps. It will also conduct an assessment of risks associated with supply chain routes, develop a clear methodology to determine the best import options to mitigate these risks, and develop capacity building programs and train national cadres to ensure continuity of project operations.

The second agreement provides for Khalifa University to provide a detailed roadmap for the development of a smart control system using AI and IoT technologies, in addition to providing all information and advice related to the implementation phase as well as technical support and annual maintenance.
