The Republic – Britain’s largest anti-monarchist group – threatened the king. Its chief executive, Graham Smith, told GB News, “We’re not intimidated at all.” Of the arrests during the coronation, Graham Smith said, “It pissed people off.”

He added that anti-monarchy groups had vowed to continue their protests against royal activity.

“We will intensify the protests this year,” he said, referring to the surge in membership in the republic since King Charles’ coronation. In the days after the event, membership nearly doubled, from about 5,000 to about 9,000, he told CNN.

He said the Republic had made between £75,000 and £100,000 after the coronation, with the group’s funds rising from £47,000 on the day of the ceremony to more than £91,000. He added that the organization had also received around £20,000 in donations, including a separate donation of £10,000.

Police have arrested 64 people for protesting against the monarchy during King Charles’ coronation. The director of Human Rights Watch called the tactics “incredibly egregious” in detaining peaceful protesters, including Graham Smith.

Scotland Yard released a statement about the arrests on the day of the coronation, which read: “The arrestees indicated that the items were to be used to protect their placards and that the investigation could not prove that they intended to use them to lock down and vandalize event.”
