KQ Cargo signs agreement with Astral to boost Africa-UAE trade

Kenya Cargo, the cargo arm of Kenya Airways (KQ), and Nairobi-based cargo operator Astral Aviation have signed a codeshare agreement to facilitate trade between Africa and the Middle East.

according to a Joint Statementthe agreement is expected to enhance the movement of goods from the Middle East to Africa through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The statement continued that KQ will place its codeshare flight number on Astral Aviation flights from Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Nairobi for continued distribution in Africa.

“KQ Cargo and Astral Aviation have had a long-standing commercial relationship over the past 20 years,” said Dick Murianki, Director of Cargo at Kenya Airways. “This partnership is a continuation of our efforts to strengthen cooperation and partnerships among African airlines and facilitate intercontinental trade while driving sustainable development on the continent.”

Astral Aviation CEO Sanjeev Gadhia described the deal between the two cargo operators as a “first”.

Gadhia added: “This codeshare agreement is the first of its kind between two major players in the African freight space and will bring more efficient schedules and greater capacity to African traders looking to import goods from the Middle East.”

According to a joint statement, Kenya Airways and Astral Aviation have been cooperating commercially and intermodally in cargo for the past 20 years.

The statement added: “Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Astral Aviation contracted Kenya Airways to repurpose the Dreamliner for other purposes, transporting Covid-related material from Guangzhou to Nairobi before connecting to the rest of Africa. .”
