Abu Dhabi-born actress Yasmine Al-Bustami original, Nashville and beathoping Hollywood continues to expand its representation of communities that have been stereotyped or ignored for decades on the screen.
Yasmine, a Palestinian and Filipino, is currently making waves as Junior Field Agent Lucy Tara NCIS: Hawaiicurrently available on the STARZPLAY network in the UAE.
NCIS: Hawaii is the latest spin-off from the wildly popular action series, and the first to feature a female lead; Vanessa Lachey as Jane Tennant, NCIS Pearl Harbor’s first female boss. The first episode of Season 2 is scheduled to air in September.
Yasmine in a conversation with Zoom city times described her Naval Criminal Investigative Service Makes Lucy Tara “more of a combative guy who doesn’t have to play by the rules.”
“Lucy is the youngest member of the team. She just joined, basically trying to figure out how and where she is on the team and how she can help overall. I think what I found with Lucy was that even though There are rules in place and probably the right procedure to do things, but she doesn’t mind going against that, and I love that about her.”

“I work out as much as I can to keep up with everyone else. The stunt team is great and cool, and I try to do everything they say the first time around, but say, if something needs to change, then (I would) work closely with them to find a way to make it work. Overall, it’s just making sure I keep up with my overall fitness and work with the stuntmen and the girls,” shared Yasmine.
Filming on the Hawaiian island of Oahu seems to have inspired some of Yasmine’s wanderlust – she has expressed a desire to film on other islands as well, though she doesn’t know if that’s coming. The overall experience was “great,” she said, adding, “I’ve never been here before and I’ve never filmed here, so it’s great to be here for work. I’m also a big traveler – so On days off, it’s fun to walk around and see the sights and meet locals and locals. Whenever I go to a place that I’ve never been to, I really enjoy learning about its history and culture, so in Hawaii knows all of this, the folklore and the stories they have…it’s a beautiful place. It’s really inspiring.”

Yasmine’s journey to become an actress was an unconventional one. She admits she “never really took acting classes” but developed an “interest or fascination” with acting during college.
“I never really pursued or wanted to go that route because I just didn’t think I could take it as a career. So the career I pursued was in business. I followed up and started working in business.”

It was revealed that it was inspired by playing Yasmine when she just needed “a little life bump”. “I remember I had casting calls in college like casting interviews; after college, I went to one and it had a bunch of student films in it. I happened to get one and enjoyed the process, so I kept on doing it I think the breakthrough might be, if not those student films, then honestly, a mix of student films because that’s where I found out that I really enjoyed acting. So that’s what motivated me to keep doing that. I think the more mainstream breakthrough would be original (She played Monique Deveraux in 10 episodes of the vampire drama). “
The beauty of multiculturalism
Yasmine shared that both individuals and professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds are inspiring.
“Oh my gosh, this makes me want to tell everyone that everyone should embrace everything! I feel like it’s only because I grew up in a multicultural, multireligious family that I understand how much it can make a difference in your life Positive impact; it’s a testament to how my parents raised me and I just think they did a great job.”
She also recalled the ups and downs on the road and cherished her parents’ efforts even more.
“Obviously it wasn’t easy; now, looking back, I can see the struggles. How they faced them and approached them together, especially in a place that was neither their home — Texas — raising two The girls, my sister and I, as an adult, I appreciate them even more.
“Growing up, I would watch my parents share stories with each other, whether it was about their country, their background, their culture, their religion, or anything related to their lives, and it was completely The opposite of.

I think I see it, but I think I just want to see more; many people from different backgrounds or races Would love to see it too. So I know it’s out there – I really hope it starts to show up in the mainstream more often.”
As she charts a course to conquer Hollywood stereotypes, Yasmine is excited to soon be returning to her birthplace, a melting pot of cultures. “I don’t have any memory of (the UAE) other than the pictures my mom and dad showed me.
