KT Tunstall’s sudden success feels like “fired like a human cannonball.”
The 47-year-old star, who has been building a career as a musician for 10 years, stepped in and performed “Dark Horse and Cherry Tree” on the BBC’s acclaimed music show “Afterwards” after she received a 24-hour notice. “Time to no avail. …with Jools Holland’, things took off from there pretty quickly.
“It was like a human cannonball being fired,” she recalled to Red magazine.
“It was totally bananas. I was running my own website at the time so people could email me. I usually get a few emails a day, but when I woke up, I had 600.
“But this experience gave birth to my favorite saying, ‘Luck is ready.’ If you don’t take advantage of it, you may not have a chance. You have to be ready to step into the light and f****** shine .”
KT admitted she relied on alcohol to cope with the pressures of fame, and while she didn’t think she had a “big problem,” she ended up quitting alcohol altogether for several years.
She said: “I’ve definitely used alcohol. I’ve had a good time, but I’ve definitely adopted a ‘head down and pretend it didn’t happen’ mentality.
“I like to be drunk. But I do feel the shift from drinking to becoming a drug — and it’s not good.
“So in 2012, when I had this epiphany, I quit drinking completely for six years.
“I wouldn’t say I have a big problem – I don’t drink during the day or before the show, it’s always after the show, but it’s not fun anymore.”
