Kvitova wins Wimbledon title fight in Adelaide

Petra Kvitova won her Wimbledon title fight at the Adelaide International No. 2 on Monday, beating Elena Rybakina, who has two matches ahead of next week’s Australian Open. Out early in the game.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova got her revenge by beating the current All England Club champion 6-3, 7-5 in the first round.

Russia’s 23rd-ranked Rybakina won their first head-to-head meeting in Ostrava last year.

“I try to play faster than Elena,” said Kvitova, who won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014.

“I’m concentrating on my serve and I’m trying to wait for my chance to break her.”

There are two ATP-WTA Adelaide Internationals this month, with Novak Djokovic and Arina Sabalenka winning the first week.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, a finalist at the 2021 French Open and surging to No. 11 in the world, also lost 7-5, 6-4 to Swiss qualifier Jil Teichmann.

It was the Russian’s first game in eight months after a recurring knee injury ended the 2022 season in May.

After last week’s first-round loss at the Adelaide International, American Danielle Collins never repeated the same mistakes.

The 2022 Australian Open finalist will be Teichmann’s next opponent after Teichmann beat Karolina Pliskova 6-2, 6-4.

Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, ranked 15th, also advanced 7-6 (7/5), 6-1, knocking out Romania’s Sorana Cirstea.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 3 Jessica Pegula were due to play this week but pulled out after impressive performances against Poland and the United States respectively. .

In the men’s draw, Britain’s Jack Draper took down Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets, while America’s Mackenzie McDonald beat another 7-5, 7-5. Great Britain’s Dan Evans.
