Dubai will be the next city to host ICOM 2025, making it the first city in the MENASA region to organise this prestigious global conference
Dubai, United Arab Emirates: His Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) and member of the Dubai Council, will lead the UAE delegation to the 26th International Council of Museums (ICOM) Congress in 2022 in Prague, Czech Republic Republic. The conference is scheduled for August 20-28 under the theme “The Power of Museums”.
During the visit, His Excellency Rem Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation, His Excellency Harrah Badri, Director-General of Dubai Culture, and officials from the UAE cultural sector will accompany the visit.
The UAE delegation to ICOM 2022 aims to strengthen communication channels with the international cultural community and exchange knowledge and expertise in the museum sector to further strengthen the sector’s sustainability.
ICOM Prague 2022 will bring together thousands of experts from around the world to discuss sustainability, leadership and debate the impact of museums on civil society development and the use of new technologies. The event will focus on four key themes, including: Purpose: Museums and Civil Society; Sustainability: Museums and Resilience; Vision: Museums and Leadership; and Delivery: Museums and New Technologies. The Congress will also provide a platform to discuss and redefine the museum.

The UAE delegation from Dubai Culture included Muna Faisal AlGurg, Chief Executive Officer, Department of Culture and Heritage; Mariam Al Afridi, Executive Director, Office of the Chairman; and Maryam Mudhaffar Ahli, Project Manager, Museums Department. The delegation also included representatives from ICOM UAE Chapter (ICOM-UAE), including ICOM-UAE Interim Chairman Rashad Bukhash and several ICOM-UAE members from the country’s museum sector.

Founded in 1946 and affiliated with the United Nations, ICOM is a global organization specializing in museums and their development and coordination. ICOM currently has more than 50,000 members from 122 countries and nearly 20,000 museums worldwide.
ICOM-UAE, in partnership with Dubai Culture, Dubai Municipality and the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, submitted the UAE’s application to host ICOM 2025 in Dubai under the theme “The Future of Museums in a Rapidly Changing Community”. After winning the bid, the emirate became the first city in the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia (MENASA) region to host this prestigious international conference. Dubai will join forces with experts and museum professionals from around the world to build ways for society to be more prepared to respond to change and create a more sustainable future for humanity.
