Rochester, NH (WGME) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis continued his presidential campaign Thursday in New Hampshire.
Speaking to more than 100 people at the American Legion lobby in Rochester, DeSantis attacked President Joe Biden for much of his 35-minute address.
So I think, unfortunately, we’re in a situation where the country is in recession,” DeSantis said. “But I’m running for president because I don’t think recession is inevitable. This decline is a choice. “
He touted his conservative record in Florida, including taking controversial positions during the COVID pandemic.
“Florida is sanity’s sanctuary when the world loses its sanity, when common sense is a rare virtue,” said Ron DeSantis.
Notably, DeSantis never singled out one Florida resident, former President Donald Trump, and he offered only veiled criticism of the man whose polls show the apparent Republican frontrunner.
“Leadership is not entertainment,” DeSantis said. “Leadership is not about building a brand.”
New Hampshire voters at the event said that’s what they want from the Republican field: Substance over insult.
After the speech, DeSantis spent another half hour in a “fireside chat” that his campaign has promoted, joined by his wife, Casey DeSantis. The Florida first lady is seen as an important part of DeSantis’ campaign as he seeks to convey a message of family and connect with voters, asserting that family values are universal.
“It’s bipartisanship,” Kathy DeSantis said. “That’s the guy on the right. That’s the guy on the left. Right in the middle.”
As the event wrapped up, the presidential candidate concluded with his closing remarks.
“We have to get it done,” he said. “It’s time for us Americans to get the job done. There are no excuses.”
DeSantis wraps up Thursday night in Manchester before heading to South Carolina on Friday.
