Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police remind residents that there will be a fine of AED 5,000 (Rs 1,08,798) if children are left unattended in their vehicles.

Police say parents should not leave their children unattended in a car, even for a few minutes to go to a store. They reiterated that this was a crime punishable by law.

Abu Dhabi Police have previously reported several incidents of children being trapped in vehicles or forgetting to sleep in the back seat. This has led to tragedy in many cases, as children can die from suffocation or heatstroke in cars, especially in the summer heat.

Dubai Police figures show 53 children were left alone in vehicles in 2020, with four cases reported each month.

In the first seven months of 2021, 39 children were rescued after being held in locked cars.

Even on a relatively cold day, temperatures inside parked cars can quickly reach life-threatening levels, according to research from the Stanford University School of Medicine.

If you park in direct sunlight for an hour, the temperature inside the car can reach 47 degrees Celsius, while the outside is at least 35 degrees Celsius.

Fines and penalties for failing to keep children safe in vehicles

  • AED 5,000 (Rs 1,08,798) fine for leaving unsupervised children in vehicles. Violators could also be jailed.
  • AED 400 (Rs 8,703) fine for failing to secure a child under the age of four in the car seat, or a child under the age of 10 in the front passenger seat.
  • In addition, the UAE penalizes putting children at risk under Federal Law No. 3 of 2016 on Children’s Rights, known as the Wadima Law. Any form of child neglect is punishable by the law, and offenders can face prison terms and hefty fines.
