For the past 66 years, the town of Leesburg has hosted Halloween parades sponsored by the Leesburg Kiwanis Club, and event organizers are seeking additional donors to help keep the tradition alive.
For the past 20 years, this annual event has been led by Bob Wright. Wright died unexpectedly in May.
“It’s one of his favorite days of the year and he’s very passionate about it. He loves seeing young and old get involved and as a spectator,” said current Leesburg Kiwanis club president Kim Thompson.
Thompson said it was difficult to take over Wright’s duties because he was so engaged and detail-oriented.
“He can tell you who everyone is by sight and by name,” she said.
This year’s parade will be held in Wright’s name. Along with his wife, Suzanne, who is also a Kiva, they help provide a safe and exciting way to celebrate the Halloween spirit, Thompson said.
The parade’s grand marshal will be the Tuscarora High School Focus Club, who have partnered with the Kiwanis Club to help organize the parade and service projects for local nonprofits.
This event is not a fundraiser for the organization; however, they do raise non-perishable items for Loudoun Hunger Relief.
Thompson is seeking more sponsors to join in to keep the event going. For more information, please visit leesburgkiwanis.org.
The parade will be held at Ida Lee Park on October 31st at 6pm. The parade route runs through the historic district along North King Street.
