Leicester violence: Indian delegation, UK officials react amid ruckus | World News

[ad_1]

New Delhi/London: The Indian delegation and British officials, including the city’s mayor, have reacted to the escalating violence in Leicester that was allegedly sparked after the India-Pakistan Asian Cup match.

At least 15 people were arrested on Monday after two weeks of clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the city. It is unclear what the source of the conflict is. Local police said they were investigating the matter.

There were reports of stray violence in the Hindu community during the march, during which some shops were vandalized, while unconfirmed footage on social media showed religious flags being pulled down from a temple.

“We strongly condemn the violence against the Indian community in Leicester and the destruction of Hindu sites and symbols,” the Indian High Commission said in a statement on Monday.

“We have discussed this matter vigorously with UK authorities and demand immediate action against those involved in these attacks,” the statement said. The city’s mayor, Peter Solsby, blamed disinformation and misrepresentation on social media for the confusion fact.

“I’ve seen quite a bit of social media content that’s very, very, very distorted right now, and some of it is completely lying about what’s going on between different communities,” Solsby told BBC radio on Monday.

On Sunday, Leicester East MP Claudia Weber posted on Twitter calling for calm.

“Now is the time to cool your head. I implore everyone to go home. We can strengthen the dialogue to repair community relations,” she said.
