Dubai is now becoming a top destination for “leisure” tourism as more people fly into the city for business and leisure needs, a spokesman for a government entity said.

“The demographics of tourists in Dubai are changing,” said Hoor Al Khaja, Acting Vice President for International Operations at Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET).

“More and more people are visiting Dubai and working remotely from here. Even in this tourism market, many of our delegates are choosing to come early, take advantage of their vacation, and go sightseeing. Some choose to stay after the exhibition at Here to enjoy their time,” Al Khaja told Khaleej Times during the Arab Tourism Market 2022, which opened on Monday.

“The city has been booming, with new market segments and new demographics emerging. We are trying to cater to this new market by offering a range of new visas. We closely monitor their behaviour, search trends etc. to satisfy their needs.”

In the first two months of 2022 alone, Dubai will see 2.2 million tourists. According to Hoor Al Khaja, one of the reasons Dubai has become so popular is the way the city has handled the Covid-19 pandemic. “We closed quickly, we reopened quickly, but our reopening was very thoughtful and safe. As a city, it showed our agility and resilience.”

When the world shuts down, we move on and open up everything we promised. We’ve opened up many new attractions, from Ain Dubai to Deep Dive to the Museum of the Future. So there’s a lot for tourists to see and do as the world emerges from the pandemic.

some trends

suit: More and more people are choosing to combine business and leisure in cities. Several people opted to work remotely while on vacation in the city.

Conscious Traveler: People are more aggressively searching for safety protocols and safety measures before traveling. This is especially true for those with families. In this regard, Dubai has become more attractive as people realize that the city is safe and accessible

Short booking lead time: Traditionally, many of our travelers in markets like Europe or the US book months or even a year in advance. However, with all the uncertainty and volatility that comes with traveling, many people choose to book weeks in advance.

Sustainability: More travelers are aware of the environment, which influences their decision on which destination to choose. People are choosing cities that match their spirit. Through initiatives such as Dubai Can — which encourages residents to bring refills instead of single-use plastic bottles — Dubai is catering to these travelers.

Long-term visitors: The number of long-term visitors has grown steadily. No more static visitors coming and going. Tourist demographics have changed significantly, and they keep coming back over longer periods of time.
