Lewis Hamilton opens Abu Dhabi and his 2022 season with Sky Sports F1 exclusively for the British Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton has vowed he will “rise again” in Formula 1, telling Sky Sports why he is motivated to recover from last year’s “painful” Abu Dhabi Grand Prix title defeat and his difficult 2022 season.
Hamilton was stripped of a record eighth world title in a race against Max Verstappen in December for misapplying the rules of then race director Michael Massey, and has been in a car so far this season. Struggling in an underperforming Mercedes.

“My father had in my heart the value of never giving up, and the easiest thing to do is give up,” said Hamilton, who started fifth and is looking for a record ninth Silverstone victory. “But it’s not how you fall, it’s how you get up.
“No matter how painful it was for me at that moment – it was so, so painful – just to know that there was a child watching… I shook hands just to show that there is strength in me no matter what and I’m going to get up again .”
Hamilton said he realised “there’s going to be a little kid watching” who may be struggling with “bullying at school, I’ve been through it too, it’s just [being] Not sure if it will end, how to face it, how to overcome it.”

He then explained that he has the same mindset for the sub-par 2022 season. Hamilton, who has yet to win a race this year, is sixth in the standings, 98 points behind leaders Verstappen.
“I’ve been back one season, I’ve struggled all year, I don’t know why this year,” he said. “But no matter how hard I try to be a better teammate.
“All the other areas I’m stepping up to that I didn’t even realize I had time for.”
Hamilton, F1’s most successful driver with seven titles and 103 victories, also said he “learned more from failures”.
“I’ve been focused all my life on … winning is everything, trying to win,” he said. “So anything, but sometimes, feels like a failure.

“I would say, I actually learn more from failure. Success and everything is good, but when you fall and fall, you learn more.
“I used to struggle with things for a long time, but now I’m able to move on and use myself better next time. Work harder, dig deeper, learn more — whatever it is.”
BADU is a community organisation based in East London that works with local young people to build positive experiences through sport, mentoring, training and job opportunities. Sky has partnered with BADU since the launch of the Sky Cares Community Program in 2019.
Hamilton targets ‘special’ British Grand Prix
In a Mercedes car upgraded for the British Grand Prix, Hamilton is looking to secure an unlikely pole position and a shot at his first win of the season and a record ninth victory at Silverstone.
However, the home favorites struggled late in the third quarter, finishing fifth with Carlos Sainz on pole.

“We have a great car, fifth isn’t the worst start, in previous races I’ve been happy with the P5, but this is the British Grand Prix and you want more,” Hamilton said.
“I’ll try to pull something special [the race], I really appreciate the support here – the fans are amazing. “
