Lewis Hamilton says his ‘worst fear has happened’ after Abu Dhabi Grand Prix title race with Max Verstappen

The seven-time world champion sees a potentially record eighth title after being beaten by the 24-year-old Red Bull driver. controversial season finale December 2021.
“You’ll see things start to unfold,” Hamilton tell vanity fair in an interview published Monday.

“My worst fear happened. I was like, there’s no way they could lie to me about it. Impossible. That’s not going to happen. It definitely won’t.”

Hamilton was well on his way to winning his eighth world title until Williams driver Nicolas Latifi crashed into the barrier with four laps left, causing the safety car to be called out.

Former F1 race director Michael Massey allowed the race to restart on the final lap and Verstappen was allowed to start almost side by side with Hamilton, despite the Mercedes driver’s previous sizable lead.

Verstappen eventually passed Hamilton on the new tires and went on to win his first F1 world championship.

Hamilton was on track to win his eighth world title last season until Verstappen used a late safety car to overtake the Mercedes driver for his first F1 title.

Hamilton said he remembered sitting in his car “in disbelief” after the race.

“I don’t know if I can really put my feelings into words,” he added.

“I do remember just sitting there in disbelief. Realizing I had to unbuckle the belt, I had to get out of there, I had to crawl out of this thing, I had to find strength,” he added. “I didn’t have the strength. I would say it was one of the toughest moments I’ve had in a long, long time.”

“Something is not right”

The results of the match drew mixed reactions on social media.

“Max is an absolutely fantastic driver, he’s had an incredible season and I have nothing but enormous respect for him, but what just happened is absolutely unacceptable. I can’t believe what we’ve just seen ,” Mercedes driver George Russell tweet then.
Former F1 champion Damon Hill also expressed doubts about Massey’s decision, tweet“It’s a new way of running the sport where race directors can make these ad hoc decisions. I think it’s a bit of a ‘guess what I’m going to do now’.”
However, Liverpool FC footballer Virgil van Dijk congratulate Verstappen tweeted: “What a boss!”

Hamilton congratulated Verstappen on his maiden world title after a dramatic season finale.

Asked if he felt cheated by Marcy’s decision and the controversy that followed, Hamilton told the magazine: “I know what happened. I know what was decided and why. Yes, I Know something is not right.”

After an intense season, Hamilton said he found solace in his father’s arms.

“He hugged me, and I think he was like, ‘I want you to know how proud I am of you.’ Having your dad hug you in this way was one of the most profound things,” he said.

“Especially when you don’t eat this stuff as many times as you grow up.”
