Lionel Richie gave advice to the “Young Superstars” at the AMAs when he was honored with the Icon Award at the ceremony on Sunday (20.11.22).
The 73-year-old singer made history as he became the only artist to take to the stage in every decade since the show’s inception, when he accepted Smokey Robinson’s tribute, calling on contemporary artists to use their time in the spotlight Time to “get inspired”.
On stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, he said: “I started with the AMAs. And my career, until now, 40 years later, I’m back at the AMAs.
“What I want to say and take the time to do is talk to young superstars. God has given you a light. That light is special, and that light is only given to a select few.
“When you hear the word ‘hipster’ it means today. When you hear the word ‘inspiring’ it means forever. If you have the chance to let that light shine on you, you will Understand what God has in store.

After the “Easy” singer wrapped up his presentation, Stevie Wonder and Charlie Puth took to the stage for what the young artist jokingly described as “a musical tennis match copyrighted by Lionel Richie.”
The pair took turns singing snippets of Lionel’s biggest hits on the piano, and Steve, 72, said: “It was a great night because we’re here to honor a great man.”
The “superstitious” hit covered songs like “Three Times a Woman,” “All Night (All Night),” “Brick House” and “Jesus Is Love,” while the 30-year-old tackled “Easy” and “say you say me”.
Many other artists, including Smokey, Melissa Etheridge, Ari Lennox, Jimmie Allen, Yola, Dustin Lynch and Muni Long joined the stage for the final act of “We Are The World”.
