When Tyrone Ward pushed a stranger in a wheelchair from the airport to his gate, he was doing it to help a person in need. His good deeds were rewarded when he discovered that the man he helped push down the ramp and took the seat next to him was PF Changs’ late co-founder Tom Franks.
Franks connected Ward with a retail entertainment mentor to help him realize the boutique entertainment concept, which has won accolades for its design.
“The facility is 25,000 square feet, but we have 60,000 square feet of entertainment here,” Ward said. “So, it’s the first place in the industry where you can come in and it gives you the illusion that the place is bigger than it was designed to be.”
Boutique retail spaces, such as gyms with individual programming, are designed to increase customer share and profitability. This model is suitable for large gyms such as Orange Theory Fitness and F45.
Owynn’s Adventure of Adventure in Lichfield Park is the same concept, a personalized experience with less overhead than larger competitors like Main Event and Dave & Buster’s that don’t offer personalization.
Owynn’s World features laser tag, a virtual reality area, a play cinema, a girls’ playroom and a boys’ playroom, a selection of arcade games and a rope obstacle course above the games. The house full of fun is accompanied by a dynamic staff/programmer who are the lifeblood of the adventure world.
“We brought in about 60 candidates … and there was a table here with chairs around them, and they sat in chairs where they thought they were being interviewed,” Ward said. “I’d just play games, some trust games, some life skills stuff, and it was fun. They were like, wow, that’s an interview?
Ward says it brings out the personality. Personality matters and his father passed away in 2015, so he knows the importance of passing on an enduring love to his daughter. The company is named after his daughter Owynn, so it must be something big.
“With her name, it’s not just dedication because that’s her real name,” he said. “That was a real image that was thrown around and created and that was going to be her legacy. So we had to make sure we got it right. We did keep the momentum going.”
