The Follino stage is about to “explode” as eleven little ladies take to the stage to compete in the sixth annual Miss Firecrackers beauty pageant.
Festivities kick off Friday, June 30 at 11:15 a.m. during the City of Elwood Arts, Crafts, Food and Entertainment Festival.
The event will feature Mindy Wilson with pageant assistants and former Miss Firecracker winners: Aria Cannon (2019 winner) and Dia Greco ( 2018 winner) co-host.
Viewers will witness contestants on stage, patriotic attire and brief interviews with the three judges on stage (Rochelle Spagnolo, Nicole Crow and Richard Griffiths) impress. Interviews are based on the hobbies and interests included in their application.
“There’s no talent show involved,” said Jenn Greco, the pageant’s new chairwoman. “It’s designed for girls to have fun without being too competitive. “You never know what they’re going to say at this age, so you can imagine it’s going to be a lot of fun!” “
According to Greco, this year’s contestants range in age from five to eight.
“The girl groups on our stage this year are great!”
All entrants will receive a trophy, belt and goody bag. There will be one patriotic spirit award (the highest score in the costume group), one runner-up award (the second place in the total score), one overall champion (the highest total score), who will be crowned Miss Firecracker 2023 and will receive a championship belt and Crown donated by Blocher Jewelers.
“The winner also gets to participate in our annual Memorial Day Parade and will be featured in local articles and more so they feel like they’re the local celebrity of the year!”
This year’s impressive lineup and their commercial sponsors are:
- Isabella Alexander (Ryan Alexander Realtors, Berkshire Hathaway)
- McKenna Babcock (Kimmel Bakery)
- Reagan Boalius (Venice Sporting Goods)
- Rain Isabella Cortez (Shell Lubricants)
- Trinity Craig (AG Studio Pro LLC)
- Olivia Davis (Creative Hues LLC)
- Ella Fauci (Saffron & Sage)
- Jordin Goring (Northland Bee Works)
- Lennon Greco (Venice Sporting Goods)
- Brianna Hoffmeier (Hoffmeier Storage)
- Korralee Wilson (Smoking Dave’s BBQ)
The Miss Firecracker beauty pageant originally originated in 2014, hosted by Becky Guisler.
“She brought the event to the Elwood City Festival and took responsibility for its past success and really made it a hometown tradition that we can all enjoy.”
Greco said she decided to contact the festival committee after noticing that the pageant had been absent from the festival for three years amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with Gisler resigning as president. She is very happy with her decision.
“My family and I love going to this festival every year and the Little Miss Firecracker Extravaganza has always been one of our favorites. When my daughter was old enough to attend, she did! In 2018, she won the championship. So , it holds a special place in my heart and I hope that other girls in our town will have the same opportunity as her. So, it’s exciting to see it come back to life!”
Greco said she couldn’t wait to enter the pageant.
“In the past, this has been a lovely, family-focused event that our town looks forward to each year and has quickly become a hometown tradition.”
One of the best parts, she says, is how exciting it is for the participants.
“The best part of the pageant is seeing the girls express their individuality on stage, the excitement of dressing up and choosing patriotic outfits, and making new friends in the community!”
