Long weekend: UAE declares public holidays to mark national day, remembrance days

[ad_1]

Private and public sector employees in the UAE will be given a three-day public holiday to mark national days and anniversaries in the country.

The announced dates are Thursday, December 1 to Saturday, December 3, meaning most UAE residents will get a four-day holiday, as Sunday, December 4, is a weekend for many workers in the Gulf state.

Last year, the UAE announced that government workers would move from a Sunday-Thursday to a Monday-Friday work week, and the private sector will soon follow suit. That means the weekend coincides with global markets on Saturday and Sunday.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) on Friday issued the latest public holiday announcement for the private sector.

Work will resume on December 5, the UAE government media office said in a social media statement.

Remembrance Day, also known as Martyrs’ Day, is held annually to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of the UAE’s military and civilian personnel. This day honors those who lost their lives in service to their country.

It was launched in 2015 by former UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The UAE celebrates National Day on December 2 each year to commemorate the day in 1971 when founder Sheikh Zayed united six of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates.

Five weeks later, a seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined the alliance.

National Day celebrations typically include fireworks, fairgrounds, car shows and parades across the country. This year will be the 51st National Day of the UAE.
