The Los Angeles County District Attorney dismissed nearly 60,000 marijuana convictions. The purpose is to eliminate some of the damage caused before the legalization of marijuana in California
according to Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles County District Attorney. George Gascón said: “The cancellation of these convictions means that thousands of deprived people who are receiving this long-needed relief have the potential to have a better future.”
Jean Guccione, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, said that although it is not clear how long the dismissal will last, “according to Gascon’s order on Monday, approximately 20,000 convictions are expected to be revoked. It’s because of the felony of possession or cultivation of marijuana,” the Los Angeles Times reported.
As you may know, the former district attorney Jackie Lacey dismissed 66,000 marijuana convictions in 2020.
Gascon also stated that he plans to ask the prosecutor and the public defender’s office to seek a “package” of court orders to convict those affected.
“After voters told us they overwhelmingly wanted to stop this marijuana war, more than 100,000 Los Angelesers were affected by this marijuana war…we want to basically eliminate this harm,” he said.
Gascon said he also plans to get prosecutors to work with the Public Defender’s Office to seek a “package” of court orders to seal the conviction records of the thousands of defendants affected by the move.
