The new cultural season at the Louvre Abu Dhabi will be based on the launch of three international exhibitions, a new annual exhibition and art awards, and a popular ongoing exhibition and public program at the Children’s Museum.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the UAE and the fourth anniversary of the establishment of the museum on November 11, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will provide a series of programs and activities to celebrate global exchanges and connections with the UAE.
Manuel Rabaté, curator of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “As the UAE welcomes the world in the coming months, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will be present at the upcoming exhibitions and events. And the show season really provides something for everyone. New international exhibitions, new collections and masterpieces on loan will join the display of works from each of the seven emirates. In this extraordinary jubilee year, we are still tenacious, Deeply rooted in our community, we are committed to telling stories of cultural connections throughout the season, starting with dragons and phoenixes.”
The new exhibition, organized in cooperation with the Musée national des Arts asiatiques – Guimet and curated by Sophie Makariou, will focus on the artistic and cultural exchanges between China and the Islamic world. From October 6, 2021 to February 12, 2022, Dragon and Phoenix-the century of communication between China and the Islamic world explored this history of mutual communication and charm. It opened five chapters and featured immersive scenes to record From the 8th to the 18th century.
A selection of weekend family movie screenings and kayak movie performances in November and December will complement the exhibition. In addition, dragon boats will join the ongoing yoga and kayaking activities popular in the museum.
Through a joint collaboration with Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille, the Louvre Abu Dhabi has set up annual exhibitions and art prizes for contemporary artists. The first Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Exhibition 2021 will be showcased at the forum from November 18, 2021 to March 27, 2022, with the proposals of all shortlisted UAE artists. This is an interactive and exchange space dedicated to contemporary art.
From these shortlisted artists, one will be selected to win the Richard Mille Art Award and receive a prize of US$50,000.
In 2022, the first international exhibition Versailles and the World (January 26 to June 4, 2022) will be held in cooperation with Versailles and the National Museum of Trianon. In the world, it is the stage of the French royal court, and it is also the stage of its fascination with various civilizations.
The exhibition was curated by Hélène Delalex, curator of the Ministry of Furniture and Decorative Arts and Bertrand Rondot, chief curator of the Ministry of Furniture and Decorative Arts, at the Palace of Versailles and the National Museum of Trianon.
“The Story of Paper” (April to July 2022) delves into a medium vital to artistic creation, documentation and dissemination. It will trace the origins of various forms of paper, from ancient China and the Islamic world to Contemporary global society. This exhibition is jointly organized with the Louvre Museum and is curated by Xavier Salmon, Director of the Louvre Painting and Printmaking Department, and Victor Hundsbuckler, the curator of the same department.
mood! The Art Nouveau Adventure Exhibition also continues in the Children’s Museum of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi. Children and families explore the four main emotions: happiness, sadness, fear and anger in the interactive activities, artwork and games on the three floors. All children under the age of 18 can enter the museum and exhibitions for free.
To coincide with the museum’s anniversary, 59 newly loaned items and 56 new collections will be exhibited in the gallery of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi. The works on loan come from lending institutions and regional and local partners within the French museum network.

To celebrate the country’s jubilee year, the museum’s iconic dome in December will be turned into an audio-visual installation that reflects the 50-year history of the UAE, including an ice rink for events organized in collaboration with Madrollers, open in the afternoon to children and young people in the evening.
Enjoy painting at the museum every week, explore artwork, develop sketching skills and learn different aspects of painting. Learn about form and perspective from ancient ceramics and reliefs, marvel at the complexity of human forms, analyze light and shade, and observe domes and buildings. Participants end every two-hour visit by participating in group discussions to critically reflect, share insights and discuss ideas.
The museum’s #MakeandPlay project will continue to be conducted in the form of online videos and museum visit meetings. The Make and Play temporary event is associated with museum artwork. Participants can make original flip books, helmets, masks, costumes or paper horses at the four event stations.
