The Belarusian president said Russia’s strategic nuclear weapons could be deployed in his country along with parts of Russia’s tactical nuclear arsenal.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier this week that his country intends to deploy tactical, relatively short-range and low-yield nuclear weapons in its neighbor and ally Belarus.
Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko’s statement on Friday about strategic nuclear weapons such as missiles carrying warheads would pose a greater threat if adopted.
Mr. Lukashenko was speaking in his State of the Union address at a time when tensions were escalating over the conflict in Ukraine and Western powers looking to destroy Russia and Belarus.
“We will do whatever it takes to protect our country, our states and their people.”
Earlier on Friday, Lukashenko unexpectedly called for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Speaking in Minsk, he said a truce must be declared without any preconditions and that all movement of troops and weapons must stop.
