GERMANY: A Darmstadt-based magnetic cooling start-up has attracted €6.3 million in financing to drive series production of refrigerators using the technology.
MagnoTherm Solutions GmbH was founded in 2019 as a spin-off company from the Functional Materials Group of the Technical University Darmstadt. The company has specialists in the field of permanent magnets and magnetic cooling.
Magnetic cooling technology does not use a gas-vapor refrigerant, but utilizes the magnetocaloric effect in iron-based rare earth alloys. These alloys heat up when magnetized and cool when demagnetized. Using a circulating heat exchange fluid, heat and cold are captured from the material into a water x heat exchanger.
The company maintains that the magnetically cooled device is 40% more energy efficient than compression-based systems, has a COP between 5 and 10, and is suitable for operating temperatures from -100°C to +80°C, with a temperature span of up to 50K . Due to the low working pressure of 2-3 bar it is said to be very safe and easy to maintain.
The company insists that the technology can save a lot of money in a short period of time, despite the higher cost of purchasing the system. Magnotherm also plans to focus on individual solutions for IT and electronics cooling and air conditioning systems.
