Mail sent to Tempe residents claims new recreation area is at risk for communities

Tempe, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) – Officials in Phoenix and Tempe remain divided over proposals to build homes in entertainment districts. Emails were sent to Tempe residents this week saying their communities were at risk from the project. The news caught many people off guard. Nick Bastian was one of the Tempe residents who received the mail. He has lived in the area on and off for 50 years. “It says ‘Take action now to prevent planes from flying over your home,'” he said. “It seems a little hypocritical to me. No one is asking anyone to change their flight mode.”

At the heart of the issue is the 1,600 residential units planned for the development of the entertainment district. Phoenix noted that the two cities signed an intergovernmental agreement in 1994. In the agreement, the city of Tempe pledged not to introduce incompatible land uses, including residential areas, under the airport’s routes.

The Phoenix Aviation Department released a statement on the matter.

Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said builders must meet certain criteria before any construction can begin. Additionally, anyone living in these units will be notified before signing a lease. “We think that’s actually not true. It says you can’t have a single-family home in that corridor, you can’t have a detached house in a single-family community,” he explained. “If the building is constructed to the proper sound standards and the proper height, then there should be no problem why the flight path has to be changed or diverted over the community.”

Meanwhile, Tempe residents like Bastian say the city desperately needs more housing. “I just think that with proper disclosure, a lot of things can go away, and if this deal is done right, it can bring a lot of economic activity to our city,” he said. Applications for rezoning of the area will be heard next month. Mayor Woods said he will meet with Phoenix next week to discuss next steps.
