Major GCC Women’s Volleyball Championship to be held in Abu Dhabi

[ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: The Fatima Bint Mubarak Women’s Sports Academy will host the inaugural GCC Volleyball Cup Championship at the Jiu-Jitsu Arena in Zayed Sports City from August 26 to 31.

The tournament will feature six teams, three of which are from the UAE – Fatima bint Mubarak Academy, Al-Wasl Club and Sharjah Women’s Club.

The tournament will also feature one team each from Saudi Arabia (Saudi Noura Club), Kuwait (Salwa Al-Sabah) and Bahrain (Bahrain Club) and will feature 72 players.

The FBMA has chosen this month’s tournament to coincide with Emirates Women’s Day, which will be celebrated in the UAE on 28 August.

To mark this occasion with the participation of top players in the Bay Area, the FBMA hopes to inspire women and girls to get involved in the sport.

The match was announced at a press conference at the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, in the presence of the council’s Executive Director of Sports Development Talal Al-Hashemi and FMBA Board Member Amal Al-Afifi.

Al-Afifi said: “The hosting of the inaugural GCC Women’s Volleyball Cup represents another important moment in the history of the FBMA as we continue to create opportunities for women to regularly participate and succeed in sport.

“Volleyball is a growing and increasingly popular sport and we are delighted to bring this important Gulf game to Abu Dhabi and showcase the best talent in the region.

“While we hope to attract new volleyball audiences, the GCC Women’s Volleyball Cup also coincides with Emirates Women’s Day, which provides a great opportunity to celebrate the outstanding women in our society.

“By putting the spotlight on these women’s volleyball players, we hope that the younger generation watching the game will be inspired by what they see and hear, and encouraged to follow in their footsteps, so they can work hard and be the best in their sport. They can be in life.”

Al-Hashemi said the match was “another important addition” to the busy schedule of sporting events in Abu Dhabi.

“We believe that this new tournament, which brings together players from different countries in the GCC, will be a valuable opportunity for teams to interact and gain more experience and deliver better performances.

“We have a strategic partnership with FBMA and we are delighted with the progress the Academy has made as it has become a major supporter of the women’s sport in Abu Dhabi.”

The format divides the six teams into two groups and will play billiards between August 26th and 28th. After a day off, the semi-finals will be played by the top two teams in each group, and the game will end a day later.
