Abu Dhabi: Malafi, the region’s first Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform and a strategic initiative of the Ministry of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), announces the launch of an image exchange solution that provides authorized clinicians with secure access to radiology and Permissions for diagnostic images are part of the Malafi patient record. Ultimately, through a phased approach, 2 million radiology images from more than 60 different healthcare sites in Abu Dhabi will be exchanged, including X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and ultrasound images.
Reaffirming the emirate’s position as a healthcare leader, the availability of radiology images in Malafi will ensure providers have a comprehensive view of patient records and the ability to review and compare images from different visits and across different time frames. Image sharing among healthcare providers is an essential part of clinical workflows – further underpinning Abu Dhabi’s agile and robust healthcare infrastructure. The time and effort spent retrieving radiology and diagnostic images from disparate systems places a heavy burden on patients and healthcare providers. In a recent Malaffi user survey, 90% of clinicians agreed that access to the full radiology archive is very important to them.
Safe access to radiology images is critical for clinicians to make better decisions to improve the delivery of high-quality, informed, and effective patient care. It also reduces the need to repeat expensive invasive radiology exams, thereby protecting patients from unnecessary radiation and reducing time and cost. With all sites connected, patients will no longer need hard copy scans and CDs at every appointment. Obtaining images is especially important for surgeons, gynecologists and obstetricians, internal medicine specialists, and cancer care teams to obtain a comprehensive view of a patient’s medical history from multiple facility appointments.
Nine hospitals at Reem Hospital and NMC Healthcare are connected and are sharing radiology images. All physicians with access to Malaffi have seamless access to this information, in addition to the written radiology reports already available in the platform.
