From January 2021 to November 2021, the agricultural commodities sector contributed RM189.5 billion in total export earnings to the Malaysian economy.
Given the growing global demand for sustainable agricultural commodities, the Plantation Ministry of Industries and Commodities (MPIC), Government. Malaysia, showcase Malaysia’s journey, efforts and initiatives in sustainable agricultural commodities during Expo 2020 Sustainable Agricultural Commodities Week.
Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Government, at an event at the Malaysia Pavilion to celebrate Sustainable Agriculture Commodities Week. Malaysia’s Datuk Hajazuraidh Kamarudin signed four MoUs for the timber and kenaf sectors. The signing ceremony was welcomed by other cabinet ministers and pavilion staff.
The agricultural commodity sector is one of Malaysia’s key economic drivers, contributing significantly to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), export earnings, employment and business opportunities, including improving the living standards of our smallholder farmers. The agricultural commodity sector has been an important tool for Malaysia to reduce poverty in Malaysia for many years.
Through a specially designed lineup of sustainable agricultural commodities exhibitions and events, MPIC hopes to promote Malaysia’s agricultural commodities and shed light on how we can integrate the goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into planting policy, development and management.
One of the highlights of the week was the launch of the Malaysian Rubber Products Virtual Showcase (MaRViS), an online platform to facilitate online business contacts between international buyers and Malaysian rubber product manufacturers, organised by the Malaysian Rubber Council, TimbeReality, a dedicated The VR platform showcases Malaysia – Timber and Furniture Products by the Malaysian Timber Council, Rubber Forum 2022 organised by the Malaysian Rubber Council and Malaysia Timber Expo 2022 organised by the Malaysian Timber Council. The Honourable Minister will also witness the signing of four MoUs, three from the Timber sector and one from the Kenaf sector.
MPIC and its agencies also arranged exciting activities for visitors to the Malaysia Pavilion, such as interactive latex painting art, agarwood product demonstrations, plasticine modeling, kenaf demonstrations, and special topics on Malaysian kenaf, timber and Malaysian Sustainable Wood Certification Lectures.
Despite the difficult global economic environment, Malaysian agricultural trade continued to perform well.
From January 2021 to November 2021, the agricultural commodities sector contributed RM189.5 billion in total export earnings to the Malaysian economy. This value has surpassed Malaysia’s total export earnings of RM152 billion in 2020. As such, MPIC will continue to raise awareness, build bridges and share the importance of our sustainable agricultural commodities work through Expo 2020 Dubai.
