LONDON (AP) — Police in London said a controlled explosion was carried out outside Bucksham Palace as a precautionary measure late Tuesday after a man was arrested there on suspicion of possessing an assault weapon.
The Metropolitan Police said officers arrested the man after he approached the palace gates and threw what appeared to be shotgun cartridges into the palace grounds. Police said a bag that police believed to be suspicious was found on the suspect.
Police said the incident was not considered terrorism-related.
“Officers acted immediately to detain the man and he is in police custody,” Chief Superintendent Joseph McDonald said in a statement.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla were not at Buckingham Palace when they were arrested. Palace officials declined to comment, saying the incident was a police matter.
A cordon was put up in the area late Tuesday. Police said officers remain at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
The incident happened a few days ago coronation of charlesis scheduled to take place at nearby Westminster Abbey on Saturday.
Buckingham Palace has seen a flurry of events in recent days as tourists and international media have begun flocking to the coronation – the first in the country since the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
Dozens of foreign royals, dignitaries and heads of state are expected to travel to the UK for the event, which will be a sprawling policing operation.
Charles and Camilla will travel in a gilded carriage from the palace to Westminster Abbey on Saturday, where they will be crowned in a historic ceremony. The pair will then be escorted back to the palace by a spectacular military procession of thousands of ceremonial troops before they emerge on the palace balcony to greet well-wishers.
