Mariam reiterates UAE’s support for adoption of global biodiversity framework at Canada’s COP15

Minister of Climate Change and Environment Mariam Bint Mohammed Almheiri is attending from 15 December to 17 December 2022.

With the theme of “Ecological Civilization-Building a Community of Life on Earth”, HLS aims to enable the participating ministers to support the final stage of negotiations on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and related decision-making, so as to ensure a complete success of the meeting.

“The world is undergoing rapid socioeconomic and environmental changes that fundamentally affect our ecosystems. Our success in addressing growing environmental challenges will depend in large part on our increased cooperation and joining together to protect our planet and the ability to protect its biodiversity,” Almheiri said.

She urged other ministers to work together to achieve the meeting’s goals for the adoption of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and to increase international ambition to reverse biodiversity loss and achieve the 2050 Biodiversity Vision for a world in harmony with nature.

The Minister noted that in line with the vision of its wise leadership, the UAE has been committed to protecting its biodiversity by developing a comprehensive legislative framework, launching relevant projects and initiatives, and engaging the community in environmental efforts.

She added, “As host of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), the UAE seeks to present a clear vision and practical processes to scale up ecosystem protection and harness nature-based solutions to address environmental challenges.”

The country’s strong commitment to biodiversity conservation was recognized at COP15, when the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) named Environment Agency Abu Dhabi’s (EAD) Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration Program among its top 10 for restoration and restoration. Furthermore, as part of his participation in COP15, the Minister attended several meetings, including the Ministerial Dialogue on Linking Biodiversity and Climate Change, the Ministerial International Steering Committee Meeting of the Nature and Human Ambition Coalition (HAC2.0), Second wrap-up of the Plastic Pollution Ambition Alliance ministerial meeting, a side event on “Halving the global footprint by 2030: Leaders’ dialogue on sustainable production and consumption and the circular economy”, and on how to ensure rapid implementation Diversity framework.

She also participated in two high-level roundtables organized by the COP28 committee – one on the link between food systems and climate change and the other on the link between biodiversity and climate change.

In addition, the minister’s agenda includes bilateral meetings with various environment, climate or food ministers, as well as senior officials of international organizations, to explore new avenues of cooperation to promote coordinated action on environmental protection and biodiversity sustainability.

The main objective of COP15 is to adopt the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The first draft framework, published in July 2021, draws on lessons learned from the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi Biodiversity Targets. It recognizes the need for urgent policy action at the global, regional and national levels to transform economic, social and financial patterns in order to stabilize by 2030 trends that exacerbate biodiversity loss and allow natural ecosystems to recover by 2050 net improvement.
