[ad_1]

Dumat Al Jandal is the largest wind farm in the Middle East and the first wind farm in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is now connected to the grid and has produced the first carbon-free megawatt-hour (MWh) of energy.

This 400 megawatt (MW) utility-scale wind power project was developed by a consortium led by two of the world’s leading renewable energy companies, EDF Renewables and Masdar.

The wind farm consists of 99 wind turbines from the supplier and EPC contractor Vestas, each with a power output of 4.2 MW. Construction started in September 2019, and the wind turbine installation project is nearing completion.

After completion, the wind farm will generate carbon-free energy to power up to 70,000 Saudi households, while reducing 988,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year to support Saudi Arabia’s climate change mitigation goals.

Olivier Marchand, Project Director of Dumat Al Jandal Wind Co for Energy LLC said: “We are delighted to start the early generation of this unique large-scale wind project at the Dumat Al Jandal Wind Farm in Saudi Arabia. Our team and contractors are implementing the highest health and safety The outstanding commitment to standards and the full support provided by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Energy, the Saudi Electricity Procurement Company (SPCC) and the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) contributed to the successful implementation of the project during this challenging pandemic. Now I look forward to working with our partners and contractors to successfully implement the full commissioning of the project in the next few months.”

Osama Al Othman, the representative of Saudi Arabia in Masdar, said: “Masdar is proud to be able to use its experience in renewable energy to work with our partners to deliver the first wind farm in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The project is related to power transmission. The successful connection of the Internet marks an important milestone for this iconic project in the kingdom, and we look forward to the completion of the project in the near future. As a global leader in the development of commercially viable wind power, Masdar is committed to promoting cleanliness in the region Technology, we will continue to work hard to support the country’s ambitious energy plan.”

The wind farm has also contributed to the economic activities of the region, creating more than 600 local jobs during the construction phase. Due to strict health and safety procedures at the site, the project also achieved 1.8 million man-hours, without a lost-time injury (LTI), achieving an important health and safety milestone.

The Dumat Al Jandal wind farm will supply electricity under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with the Saudi Electricity Procurement Company (Saudi Power Generation and Distribution Company), a subsidiary of the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).
