If we recall March 2020, the world was on a standstill as the World Health Organization declared an official pandemic following the outbreak of the coronavirus (also known as COVID-19).

Countries around the world have implemented stay-at-home guidelines, flights have been grounded, and daily life as we know it has come to a standstill.

From the outset, the UAE has actively taken steps to combat the virus, implementing health and safety guidelines, social distancing measures and mask regulations, which came into effect on March 26, 2022, and have been closely monitored since then.

Now, two and a half years later, Emirati officials have announced that masks are no longer mandatory in almost all circumstances.

On Monday evening, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) announced at a briefing that from 28 September 2022, most open and closed facilities and spaces in the UAE and in Dubai private schools, early childhood centres, universities and training institutions. However, masks remain mandatory in medical facilities, mosques and public transport.

In addition, masks are no longer mandatory on flights, but airlines have the right to mandate masks if deemed necessary.

In addition, the quarantine period for individuals who test positive for COVID-19 has been shortened to 5 days, and the green pass on the Al Hosn app has been extended from 14 days to 30 days.

While we are finally seeing almost all restrictions eased, NCEMA noted that “despite the current situation stable, the pandemic continues and the next phase will require community responsibility”.
