The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has announced the addition of Dammam’s King Abdulaziz Port to container shipping giant Maersk’s Shaheen Express shipping service to facilitate trade between the Arabian Gulf and the Indian subcontinent.
The weekly service will link King Abdulaziz Port with major regional hubs such as Jebel Ali (Dubai) and India’s Mundra and Pipawav ports via the container ship BIG DOG. The carrying capacity is 1,740 TEU.
A statement from Mawani said the latest addition will strengthen the country’s liner connectivity and prosper its imports and exports.
It will help expand the port sector’s current range of competitive offerings as envisioned in the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS), a multi-sectoral blueprint to transform Saudi Arabia into a key logistics hub at the crossroads of three continents.
According to Mawani, 2022 has seen several shipping lines choose Dammam as an important port of call, including SeaLead Shipping’s Far East to Middle East (FAM) service, Emirates Shipping Line’s Jebel Ali Bahrain Shuwaikh (JBS) service and Gulf-India Express 2 (GIX2) by Aladin Express in addition to recent Pacific International Lines (PIL) connections to the ports of Singapore and Shanghai on the Gulf China Service (GCS).
King Abdulaziz Port has been declared the fourteenth most efficient port in the World Bank’s 2021 Container Port Performance Index, a historic achievement stemming from its state-of-the-art infrastructure, world-class operations and record performance.-TradeArabia News Service
