As the sun began to set, Leclerc set off early with a time of 1m 26.045s – already faster than FP1 despite the medium tyres – ahead of the Esteban Oconthe mountains and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari).
After missing FP1, Verstappen went soft first in this section, jumping immediately to P1 in 1m25.449s before dropping it to 1m25.335s. Perez took P2, half a second behind Leclerc and Verstappen by 0.264 seconds.
Russell took P2 with a time of 0.152s, with Hamilton fourth but setting the fastest first section.
Verstappen ran again and cut his lap time to 1m25.146s, which gave him a three-tenths lead with 20 minutes remaining under floodlights. Russell was second, ahead of Leclerc, Hamilton, Perez and Sainz.
