Maya Angelou becomes the first black woman in the United States!

[ad_1]

We’re still waiting for the Treasury Department to roll out the $20 Harriett Tubman note, but in the meantime, the bureau responsible for producing the state’s coins is planning to honor #MayaAngelou this quarter!

according to New York Post, the U.S. Mint has begun rolling out quarters featuring activist and poet Dr. Maya Angelou. The new design marks a moment in history when a black woman appeared on a coin for the first time.

“Every time we redesign our currency, we have an opportunity to talk about our country — what we value and how we are progressing as a society,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement. “I’m proud that these coins celebrate the contributions of some of America’s most distinguished women, including Maya Angelo.”

The “head” face of the new season will still be George Washington’s face, and the “tail” face will still be a tribute to Maya Angelo and her autobiography “I Know Why Caged Birds Sing.”

The Mint is reportedly planning to release four more commemorative coins this year, honoring the women who made history in their fields. The coins will feature Sally Ride, the first American woman in space; Wilma Mankiller, the first female leader of the Cherokee Nation; Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American Hollywood star; and Nina Otero-Warren, the American woman’s Suffragist and educator.

Angelou’s coin, however, was the first in the American women’s dormitory program.

“Maya Angelou’s writing and activism have inspired countless Americans, and her legacy has helped advance greater equity and understanding in our country,” said Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, the bill’s Senate sponsor. “She was exactly the kind of leader I had in mind when Senator Fisher, Rep. Lee and I wrote our bipartisan legislation to create a series of dorms honoring the contributions of women in America. This coin will ensure generations of Americans know about Maya Angelo’s books and poems about the lived experiences of black women.”
