New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been in the headlines a lot lately, and most recently, he proposed that the drill rap genre be banned from the city for promoting images of guns and violence. Mayor Adams made the suggestion last weekend following the fatal shooting of 18-year-old drill rapper Chii Wvttz, and he took a meeting with the rappers responsible for the popular music on Tuesday night.
Maino posted a video to Instagram sitting beside Mayor Adams, and surrounded by almost a dozen drill rappers from his city including Fivio Foreign, B Love and more. Maino stated that the rappers wanted to have an authentic dialogue about the impact of drill rap, and will be working with the Mayor to “roll out something together on the whole conversation.”
During a press conference over the weekend, Mayor Adams insisted that drill rap be pulled off of streaming sites, just like Trump was “pulled off Twitter.”
“I had no idea what drill rapping was, but I called my son and he sent me some videos and it was alarming,” he said. “We are going to pull together the social media companies and sit down with them and tell them that you have a civic and corporate responsibility.”
“We pulled Trump off Twitter because of what he was spewing. Yet we are allowing music displaying guns and violence. We allow this to stay on the sites,” Mayor Adams continued. “We are alarmed by the use of social media to really over -proliferate this violence in our communities. This is contributing to the violence that we are seeing all over the country. It’s one of the rivers we have to dam.”
It’s unclear how Adams plans to make change with the rappers, but we’ll keep you updated on the story as it develops, Roomies.
