MBZUAI welcomes students from 25 countries

Abu Dhabi’s Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is globally recognized for its unique academic model, focusing on artificial intelligence research and applications and academic excellence. It is the world’s first postgraduate research university dedicated to artificial intelligence.

The university recently announced that it welcomed 127 new students for the fall 2022 semester. With the addition of new entrants, the university’s student population now stands at 259.

Academic seats are competitive, with 3,668 applications received and an acceptance rate of 3.73% across the three divisions it currently offers, including MSc and PhD programmes in Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing.

There are 22 new doctoral students and 105 master students.

Thanks to highly qualified faculty and their published work, the university continues to attract top students from more than 25 countries, including new locations such as Japan, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Indonesia and Iraq. Twenty-three students are from CS’s top 100 universities.

About 32 percent of incoming freshmen are women, in line with the university’s mission to encourage more women to continue their graduate education and enter academia or research.

“As a research university, one of our core contributions is to develop AI talent — a pipeline that nurtures and sustains future builders, innovators, thinkers and leaders in the field,” said MBZUAI President Professor Eric Xing.

Among the newly welcomed students are 30 UAE nationals who will join other students to support 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution) solutions and the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence 2031 National Strategy.

MBZUAI is ranked 30th globally in its focus areas (artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning and natural language processing), which puts the university ahead of globally renowned research universities such as the University of Michigan, Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan North America Toronto ; Imperial College London, EPFL and the Max Planck Society in Europe, etc.

In other news, the university is working with IBM to advance artificial intelligence research. At the heart of the collaboration is the establishment of a new AI Centre of Excellence on the University’s Masdar City campus.
