Thai Randolph is CEO of Kevin Hart’s global media company, Hartbeat. Last year, she raised $100 million in private equity funding through a deal to combine Hart’s two entertainment companies, HartBeat Productions and Laugh Out Loud.
As a black woman, Randolph was passionate about using her position to create opportunities for women of color. At Hartbeat, Randolph launched the Women Write Now Comedy Writer’s Fellowship with Candice Wilson Cherry, co-founder of WWN and Head of Film at Hartbeat. WWN is now opening a call for submissions for its third session on April 26th. The scholarship provides mentorship, publicity, production and exhibition to its recipients.
Round two scholarship recipients include Mayanna Berrin, Kiana Butler Jabangwe and Danielle Solomon.Together, the trio were given the chance to write comedy shorts under the direction of some of the most influential black women in comedy, including Netflix’s Logan Browning Perfect and dear white peopleTika Sumpter Sonic the Hedgehog and ABC’s Hybrid, with NBC’s Nicole Byer big crew and netflix nailed it. All three films will debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
Randolph defines Hartbeat’s mission as the desire to make the world laugh together. “At a time when depression, anxiety, and loneliness are gripping most of the world during a pandemic — when social and news feeds often divide us — Hartbeat is creating and distributing comedic entertainment that brings people together Through the Universal Connective Tissue: Laughter,” she said in an exclusive interview with me. this mission. “
Hartbeat doubled its revenue in 2022, nearly doubled its team size, and now has more than 70 projects in various stages of development and production. “I would say we’re doing a good job of advancing that mission,” Randolph said.
Although Randolph has always been Realizing her gifts as a storyteller and problem solver, it wasn’t until 2016, when she created a vision board and mission statement for the New Year, that she clarified her purpose in life. “Telling stories and building businesses that empower, educate and entertain.”
Seeing her career as a river rather than a ladder, she has experience ranging from providing marketing services to aerospace and defense companies to leading film festival fundraisers. “Like a river, I collected and deposited different gems at each location,” Randolph explained. “I overcame obstacles and went through fast and slow times, but ultimately those experiences took me to where I needed to be. Not only was I building a business and telling a story, but I was blessed to be able to help others do the same.”
These days, Randolph finds the most fulfilling aspect of what she and Hartbeat are doing is providing tangible benefits to other people. “The physical, emotional and social benefits of laughter are scientifically proven. It’s a powerful motivator to think that the content we create and the experiences we generate can provide another person with some level of happiness, joy or relief,” she explain. She also loves helping others achieve their dreams through Women Write Now and Hartbeat’s diverse team.
For those looking to pursue their purpose in life, Randolph offers this advice. “Know your Where and yours Why. your Where It is your vision – the dream you want to achieve.your Why It’s your purpose—the reason you’re on this journey. You may not know all the directions on how to get where you want to go, and there are bound to be setbacks along the way. But if you know where you are going and why getting there is important to you – if you keep flowing and growing – I guarantee you will get there. “
