“How long have you been in Abu Dhabi, mother…”
Once a reserve for science fiction scripts, autonomous taxis are now a reality. Meet the first fully automated taxi “Txai” in the UAE.
The UAE-based Bayanat company launched these special chat-free rides at the Smart City Summit in Abu Dhabi. As part of the test phase, they will be excitingly unveiled on the streets of Yas Island this month.
Geospatial data analysis, complex learning algorithms, and AI driving software pioneered by Bayanat make this Knightrider (showing our age here) future technology possible.
All hail self-driving taxis
In November of this year, five Txais will transport passengers between nine hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and offices on Yas Island in the initial test phase.
The second phase will further expand the coverage area to the entire Abu Dhabi.
In order to make it easier for people to accept the concept of driverless taxis, there will be a “safety officer” in the vehicle during the trial phase.
Therefore, driverless taxis seem to be part of Abu Dhabi’s near-term future. It is possible that we will miss being asked “Where do we come from?” But it is unlikely that we will be arguing about changing the 100 dirham bill.
First gear
this is a big problem. This is the first L4 autonomous driving test in the entire MENA region.
Speaking of the safety aspects of the project, His Excellency Falah Al Ahbabi, Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transportation (DMT), said: “DMT has been working with its partners in Bayanat and Miral to test the safety of vehicles. In addition, it oversees operations to ensure safety and A unique way to provide state-of-the-art services and ensure compliance with UAE traffic laws and regulations.”
