Queen’s death Means Prince Harry and Meghan’s children should be Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet – if the royal family sticks to convention.
A change of title, usually an automatic right when a new monarch comes to power, has been questioned after Meghan, In an interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, said the royal family had discussed changing the rules to permanently strip Archie of the crown prince title. She said the family had decided not to grant him the title of Prince or His Royal Highness while she was pregnant with Archie, and suggested it had something to do with their concerns about the baby’s skin colour.
“I think even with that pact that I said, when I got pregnant, they said they wanted to change Archie’s pact,” she said in an interview.
Under the rules established by King George V in 1917, the descendants of the monarch receive titles but no great-grandchildren. Since Archie and Lilibet are grandsons of the new monarch, King Charles, they should now receive the titles of Prince and Princess.
A spokesman for Harry, known as the Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, did not respond to a request for comment; neither did Buckingham Palace. Charles has long supported a streamlined monarchy.
Meghan and Harry, fifth in line to the throne, stopped using their most unique titles, “His Royal Highness” and “His Royal Highness,” in 2020 after announcing they would no longer be royals.
