Michelle Heaton has ‘high heels and a gown for going out’ for her stay in rehab.
The Liberty X singer, who checked into Abbey clinic in April 2021 to deal with her alcoholism, admits it was a “real culture shock” in her first few weeks as the reality of living with other addicts was harder than she expected is much more difficult.
She told OK! Magazine: “It’s not exactly a hotel. I remember packing heels and going out dresses because I thought we were going to be going out for a meal. But apparently not. It was a real culture shock.
“The first week was very tough. When I came to my senses it all came to the surface – it was horrible, it was so painful.
“You’re hurting because you’ve lost something, you’re mourning something. I’m mourning drinking.
As part of her recovery, Michelle’s husband, Hugh Hanley, father of her children Faith, 11, and AJ, 8, had to write a letter detailing how her drug addiction took her from Stolen from home.
The businessman found the job “very tough” but knew it was the right thing to do.
He said: “That was really tough. When someone I love is down I feel like I’m kicking her because the point of this letter is to show them what they’re doing when they’re on drugs can upset you confused.”
Michelle kept the letter as a reminder of how far she had come.
She added: “It was heartbreaking to hear. At this point I was sober and one of the people on the project read it so I could really acknowledge what was written.
“I realized how messed up I was causing my family. In addiction you just don’t see it.
“I have that letter by my bedside today, and when I read it now, it affects me in a different way and is determined to continue doing what I’m doing.”
