Middle East corruption rankings: Syria most corrupt, UAE least, Turkey slips

Syria worst, United Arab Emirates best fight corruption In the MENA region, Turkey’s score dropped further, from 96 to 101 Globally, according to a Transparency International report released Tuesday.

International corruption watchdog released 2022 Corruption Perception Index, which examines 180 countries’ records on transparency and fighting corruption. Most countries in the Middle East and North Africa fell in the rankings, with the region’s average score falling to a new low of 38 out of 100, with a score of zero indicating a country is highly corrupt.

“Countries in the Middle East and North Africa are struggling to achieve tangible anti-corruption results. No country has seen a significant improvement in its Corruption Perception Index (CPI) over the past decade,” the watchdog said.

In 2022, Oman has the largest drop of 8 points compared to 2021. The Gulf state currently ranks 69th on the Global Corruption Index. The index showed that Israel was the best performer, rising four places to 31st.

The index puts Turkey in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region, which also includes Russia and Ukraine.Turkey ranks 101st global ranking, down from 96th, down 2 points from 2021. Transparency International said the country has seen a “significant decline” in its fight against corruption over the past few years.

The watchdog placed Ukraine 116th and Russia 137th, making Ukraine one of the few improved countries in the region.
